Pre Class :  Lori Hurley “How to Make a Living as an Artist or Entertainer…Even in a Recession!”

Ok, I will admit that I wasn’t super thrilled with how Lori described her pre-class.  On the FABAIC website the description sounds a lot like advertising and not very much like a class write-up. 
I don’t like to be marketed “at”.

I have and looooooove her book by the same title and I just didn’t want the class to be a re-hashing of the same things over and over again.  The Kapital Kidvention taught me that family entertainers love to sell stuff to their fellow entertainers and no way in heck was I going to pay $150 to sit through 8 hours of sales pitches.

So what did I do?  I emailed Lori and then we had a telephone discussion about what the class is actually going to be on.  

And now I’ve plunked down $150 to go to her class. 

I’m expecting a one-on-one experience with her.  I need help with my phone skills and business organization.  And I’m totally willing to pay for that kind of help.

1. Attend FABAIC 
            A. First I need to buy Tickets 
            B. Then I need Flight Tickets
            C. Then I need Roomates (hint hint)
            D. Then I need to figure out what I’m taking (and not taking)
            E. Then I need to find baby sitters
            F. Then I need to figure out what I’m gonna buy
            G. Then I need to figure out what classes I’ll attend
            H. Then I need to figure out if I can set up some interviews while I’m there…
            I. Then I need to book a TON of gigs to save up : )

Get it? Bullseye = Goals

2. Create my Coloring Page with my info on it
            I mean, I paid for it – I should be using it!

3. Create my Invitiations / insert
            Yeah – same thing

4. Set up my “adult” body art website
              Come on Craig – set me up already!

5. Get up the nerve to  send emails to Baltimore area clubs
              Sigh – it’s okay to fail, Michelle… Just do it already!

6. Do more party research & blog more for my paying customers
            Party themes, party tips etc. for parties in Columbia & Baltimore, MD

7. Write an e-book/pamphlet about corporate party planning
            And offer it for free to the folks that I actually want to hire me

8. See Eclipse
             I’ll figure out what that has to do with face painting later (be still my RoBear loving heart!)

9. Get a Silhouette Digital Craft Cutting Machine
             And make some SICK glitter tat stencils

10. Full Body Glitter Tattoo Photo Shoots
            6 words that strike terror and awe in my little heart

11. Buy Aprons and Polos and figure out a dress code
             My Dorothy Shoes will ALWAYS be part of that code

12. VIDEOS
             For crying out loud.  This should be #2

13. EZ UP
             Anyone selling theirs?  : )

4/8/10 Update:
1. I bought my FABAIC tix, found roomies, reserved the room, made up a condensed kit, found a babysitter, and decided on the classes.

4. Craig set me up and now I just need pictures.

5. Didn’t work out so hot but I’m going to keep trying.

6. So far so good.

9. Squeeee!  It’s on its way to me!!!!

10. Date’s set- just need the hair stylist to confirm.

11. I *made* my own apron.  Tutorial to come?  Maybe, but it was sooooo easy.

12. Made one, now just need to find Linux friendly video editing program.

If you missed it, it was a great opportunity to meet other entertainers in this area and network like crazy! The classes and general lectures were great and I had a blast.  It was AWESOME to get to hang out and learn from entertainers outside the Face and Body Art world.

There were balloon artists, face and body painters, ventriloquists *swoon!*, magicians, clowns and even a Yo-Yo Guy!!  And my favorite part was that we got to Jam TOGETHER!  You know how face painters are usually the quiet group, sitting and concentrating on the art?  Well when you mix in every other type of entertainer you can imagine, we can get down right loud and silly!

So, Louis and Lynn- the coordinators of the Kidvention- have decided to host what I am terming as the Kidvention “After” Jam session.  And it was great!  We got to see our new friends from the Kidvention, eat dinner, and Jam together.  We had balloon artists jamming, face painters rocking out, magicians making everyone laugh, and that awesome Yo-Yo Guy was there too!

I’m looking forward to next month’s jam, which I believe is a Thursday but I’ll have to check.  Hopefully it isn’t the same week as LA Fete, but I’ll post more deets as they arise!
